Redesign… Again… on June 30th, 2008

If you are a frequent visitor or returning visitor to the site, I’m sure you are thinking something along the lines of…”Wasn’t there just a redesign a few weeks ago?” or “Wow, that last redesign sure didn’t last very long!”  I know, most popular websites redesign like once a year, if even that often. However, the last redesign just didn’t sit so well with me.

The last design had some nice elements, which I tried to carry over to the new design, but there were also lots, and I mean lots, of boring aspects.  It just didn’t pop like I thought it would and the design in general got old and boring very fast.  The colors looked more and more bland every day and just seemed very dark and monotone.

So, I went back to photoshop.  I started fresh and just let the design sort of create itself.  I decided to work slow, but efficiently.  I let the ideas come and tried not to force anything into the theme.  If I ran out of ideas, I stopped working and waited for the ideas to come to me rather than seeking them out.

I tried to bring some of the strong points from the last design into the new one.  Overall, I just wanted a new feel to the site.  For the most part, my design have all been generally the same, a large box of content with some style inside and a pretty little background image.  This time I decided to try some new designs, break out of the old and broaden my horizons a little.  This is what I came up with.

There are some bugs I’m sure.  The portfolio page especially needs some work, but other than that, things should be running pretty smoothly.  As always, Internet Explorer will need some time to get things smoothed out; I don’t know why anyone in their right mind would want to use that browser anyway.

UPDATE: I’ve been experimenting with javascript and the jQuery library.  So far I’ve set up a site settings feature at the top right where users can set their preferences as to whether they prefer external links to open in the same window/tab or in the same window/tab.  Soon I should put up something similar for site search.
